Nice University Hospital: New Recognition for its Excellence in Research and Innovation

Nice University Hospital, winner of the ‘Hospital-University Research in Health (RHU)’ call for projects with the REBONE project

At the ‘CHU X healthtech Connexion Day in Marseille’, the announcement was made that the CHU of Nice has been selected as the winner of the RHU call for projects in health with the REBONE project. This project is focused on ‘preoperative 3D reconstruction in real time for improved assessment in bone repair’.

The project aims to establish Nice University Hospital as a center of expertise in the reconstruction and repair of complex bone traumas using mixed reality, Artificial Intelligence (AI), 3D modeling, and the anatomical customization of implants and prostheses that will be ‘custom printed’ for the patient.

‘REBONE’ focuses on significantly reducing complications and shortening recovery time associated with complex traumas. At the heart of this initiative is the development and validation of a personalized, automated, and collaborative preoperative planning approach.

Thus, ‘REBONE’ aims for a continuous, significant, and profound improvement in the clinical and surgical treatment of severe trauma cases. By enhancing the quality and safety of care, this project positions itself as an important milestone in the evolution of medical practices, marking a decisive turn in the field of orthopedic surgery.

Supported by Nice University Hospital, the ‘REBONE’ project is a consortium that includes the Côte d’Azur Univeristy, CNRS, INRIA, INSERM, the PASTEUR Institute, AP-Paris Hospitals, and industrial partners (Abys Medical, NEWCLIP TECHNICS, ADDIDREAM, DePuy Synthes, Aguila Expertise). It has a budget of 24.6 million euros, with 8.2 million euros funded by the National Research Agency (ANR).

The project was defended in July by a delegation from Nice in front of an international jury in Paris as part of the France 2030 investment plan, which aims, among other things, for massive investment in innovative technologies.

Hospital-University Institute (IHU) RespirERA: A Commitment to Respiratory Health

In May 2023, Nice University Hospital, in collaboration with the University of the Côte d’Azur, Inria, and Inserm, was selected to create a Hospital-University Institute dedicated to respiratory health.

Named RespirERA, this project received funding of 20 million euros as part of the France 2030 plan.

This new IHU will focus on critical diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, and lung cancers.

These two distinct projects, although different in nature and objective, demonstrate Nice University Hospital’s commitment to excellence in medical research and innovation.

These initiatives position Nice as a hub of medical research excellence, not only in France but also on the international stage.
