  • Budget: The budget for the 2030 Winter Olympics is €1.975 billion, significantly lower than the costs of Paris 2024, highlighting a well-managed financial strategy.
  • Use of existing infrastructure: In line with the CIO’s Agenda 2020+5, the project prioritizes the use of existing infrastructure to minimize costs and environmental impact.
  • Strong local involvement: The commitment of local and regional authorities to the candidacy of the French Alps is significant, notably with a closing ceremony that could take place on the Promenade des Anglais, aiming to create a memorable event for the community and visitors.

The recent visit (end of April 2024) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) to Nice marked an important step in the preparation of the 2030 Winter Olympics.

This four-day inspection in the French Alps allowed the discovery of the proposed sites for the different events and the evaluation of the existing infrastructure in the region as part of the candidacy of the French Alps.

The approach presented for these games highlights a desire for budgetary sobriety and efficiency, a model in contrast to other editions. The economic strategy for these Games is distinguished by its rigor and sustainability.

In accordance with the CIO’s Agenda 2020+5, the emphasis is on cost reduction and the optimization of existing infrastructure.

The budget of €1.975 billion announced for the organization of the Games, excluding infrastructure, is significantly lower than that of Paris 2024.

Local and regional authorities have also played a major role in this planning.

The Mayor of Nice, President of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis and Deputy President of the SUD Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region, Mr. Christian Estrosi, and the presidents of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Sud regions have expressed their commitment to meet the IOC’s requirements while preserving the economic and environmental interests of their territory.

The Promenade des Anglais, one of the city’s jewels, could host a closing ceremony, which should not only charm visitors but also stimulate the local economy through tourism.

This project thus illustrates a new form of management of the Olympic Games, where the economy of means and community integration are priorities.

If the candidacy of the French Alps is selected, the expected economic benefits, although not yet quantified, should be significant, notably in terms of the enhancement of existing infrastructure and tourist attraction.

The official announcement of the IOC’s decision is expected to take place before the opening of the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.
