Nice structures its commitment around Sea Year 2025
In preparation for the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC 2025), the City of Nice and the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis are launching Sea Year 2025.
This initiative brings together cultural, scientific, and community stakeholders to raise awareness about sustainable ocean management and marine biodiversity.
Three pillars for a cross-sectoral program
Sea Year 2025 is structured around three complementary initiatives:
- The Ocean University: 100 conferences and discussions exploring the intersection of arts and sciences related to the ocean.
- The Ocean and Arts Biennale: 11 exhibitions, a public space art tour, and a dedicated program inspired by Rachel Carson, a pioneer in ecology.
- The Blue Program: A series of cultural and artistic events—screenings, festivals, performances—integrating ocean themes into local life.
A structuring investment for the region
Two financial mechanisms have been implemented to support local initiatives:
- The Call for Expressions of Interest “Sea Year in Nice”: 18 cultural projects selected with a total budget of €200,000.
- The “Antoine Risso” Call for Projects: 33 initiatives focused on marine biodiversity preservation, funded with €150,000.
A key event for the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis
Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, President of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, and Deputy President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region: “For nearly two years, the City of Nice and the Metropolis have been working closely with state and UN agencies to prepare for this pivotal moment for our shared future. In Nice, a green and blue Mediterranean city, we have developed an ambitious year-long program in collaboration with cultural and institutional actors, focusing on the themes of the ocean and marine biodiversity. An entire year of events and projects reflecting the colors and richness of the ocean.”
