The Nice University Hospital performs its 100th liver transplantation since 2024

Nice University Hospital has performed its 100th liver transplantation since the programme was launched in 2024. The institution is one of 16 French university hospitals authorised to perform adult liver transplantation. The activity is carried out in conjunction with the Biomedicine Agency and with the support of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Regional Health Agency.

The 100th transplant was performed on a patient with liver cancer on post-hepatitis C cirrhosis. The first liver transplantation carried out at Nice University Hospital involved a patient suffering from decompensated cirrhosis with ascites. In many situations, transplantation is the only possible curative treatment.

The programme meets a need for local access to care for residents of the Alpes-Maritimes, part of the Var and Corsica. Indications for transplantation are increasing, particularly in hepatic oncology. Patient profiles vary: acute liver failure in young patients, decompensated cirrhosis or liver cancer in older patients.

This milestone adds to the indicators that structure Nice University Hospital’s activity: 920 annual publications, 28 active patents, the creation of the AZUR clinical research entity in March 2026, and national France 2030 programmes with the RespirERA University Hospital Institute and the Rebone University Hospital Research Programme.

A multidisciplinary programme serving the region

Nice University Hospital has reached the milestone of its 100th liver transplantation since the launch of the programme in 2024, according to a press release published on 26 May 2026. The institution is one of 16 French university hospitals authorised to perform this procedure, in close collaboration with the Biomedicine Agency and with the support of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Regional Health Agency.

Liver transplantation brings together a wide range of expertise within the University Hospital: hepatologists, surgeons, anaesthetists and intensive care specialists, operating theatre teams, nurses, hospital organ procurement coordinators, radiologists, gastroenterologists and allied health professionals. This organisation ensures coordinated care at every stage, from pre-transplant assessment to post-transplant follow-up.

The programme is continuing to develop in order to meet the growing needs of the region. Indications for transplantation are increasing, particularly in hepatic oncology, with varied patient profiles. This programme helps ensure local access to highly specialised care for residents of the Alpes-Maritimes, part of the Var and Corsica.

On this occasion, Nice University Hospital reiterates the importance of organ donation. Despite constantly increasing needs, the number of donors remains insufficient. Informing families and raising public awareness remain essential so that everyone can make their wishes known, an indispensable act of solidarity that saves lives.

This milestone strengthens Nice University Hospital’s position as a clinical and research reference centre in the region. With 920 annual publications, 28 active patents, the creation of the AZUR clinical research entity in March 2026 and the national RespirERA University Hospital Institute and Rebone University Hospital Research Programme, the University Hospital forms the foundation of the Nice Côte d’Azur health ecosystem.
