Nice University Hospital launches Health Data Warehouse to advance medical research and innovation

Nice University Hospital (CHU de Nice) has announced the deployment of its Health Data Warehouse (Entrepôt de Données de Santé, EDS), a secure digital infrastructure designed to turn healthcare data generated through patient care into a powerful resource for medical research, therapeutic innovation and improved patient outcomes.

The initiative forms part of EDS Méditerranée, which was selected under the second wave of the France 2030 call for projects, and is led by Professor Marc-Olivier Gauci.

A tool designed to directly benefit patients across the French Riviera

According to Rodolphe Bourret, CEO of Nice University Hospital: “Every day, thousands of patients receive care at Nice University Hospital. The data generated throughout these care pathways represents an exceptional resource for better understanding diseases and improving treatments. With the Health Data Warehouse, we are transforming this resource into a practical tool serving the health of people in the Alpes-Maritimes and Corsica. More research, more innovation, but above all direct benefits for patients: more accurate diagnoses, better-tailored care and a greater capacity to address major public health challenges. Nice University Hospital is thereby reinforcing its position as the leading university hospital for our region, combining medical excellence, responsible innovation and public service.

A new era for medical research

According to Professor Marc-Olivier Gauci: “EDS Méditerranée is the result of a collective effort that began two years ago. It marks a new era for healthcare. In the future, all medical research relying on patient data will use these secure data warehouses. This is an essential tool governed by very strict rules to protect patient data while ensuring that innovations, particularly in artificial intelligence, are reliable and contribute to the highest standards of care. The Health Data Warehouse, particularly at Nice University Hospital, will enable major advances in key public health challenges as well as in prevention, surgery and rare diseases. Thanks to EDS Méditerranée, our region is equipping itself to pursue international scientific excellence to deliver better healthcare in the future.

A rigorous technological and regulatory framework

The EDS Méditerranée Health Data Warehouse at Nice University Hospital was implemented with the support of GCS CARES. It is deployed in strict compliance with the applicable regulatory framework, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Health Data Warehouse framework established by CNIL, the French data protection authority. The data integrated into the warehouse is pseudonymised, and patients have the right to object to the use of their data at any time.

A structured regional ecosystem

Data from EDS Méditerranée can now be shared with the Health Data Warehouses of Centre Antoine Lacassagne and Fondation Lenval as part of local multicentre projects. On a broader scale, the project aims to structure research across the entire Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region, together with AP-HM and Institut Paoli-Calmettes. The Health Data Warehouse will also connect with supercomputing infrastructure and research teams across the French Riviera, including the 3IA Côte d’Azur artificial intelligence institute, to provide a leading scientific environment.

The project is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and France 2030.
