The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted ExAdEx-Innov a U.S. patent protecting its technology, developed around human ex vivo tissue models.
The application had been filed with SATT Sud-Est, which owns the patent, ExAdEx-Innov holding the exploitation rights.
A significant milestone for the Nice-based biotech’s intellectual property portfolio and a confirmation of its science-driven approach.
By working exclusively with donor-derived human adipose tissue, the patented ExAdEx technology generates fully functional 3D ex vivo models that preserve what makes human tissue unique: mature adult and progenitor cells, an intact vascular and lymphatic network, and a native three-dimensional extracellular matrix, with no exogenous materials added.
The platform delivers first-in-human data without a single patient enrolled in a trial, and covers three domains: pharmaceutical R&D (metabolic diseases such as obesity, insulin resistance and cardiometabolic conditions, along with fibrosis, chronic inflammation, extracellular matrix remodeling and vascular impairment), dermo-cosmetics and aesthetic medicine (claims validation, active ingredient testing, complex phenomena such as GLP-1-induced tissue changes), and longevity science through the ExAdEx Longevity Lab™, a hybrid in silico / ex vivo framework designed to study aging and tissue rejuvenation.
With the United States being the world’s largest pharmaceutical and biotechnology market, this protection strengthens ExAdEx-Innov’s ability to operate and partner with confidence on that market, while confirming the value of years of scientific development carried out with its academic founding partners (CNRS, INSERM, Université Côte d’Azur, CHU de Nice) and with the support of local and national agencies: SATT Sud-Est, BpiFrance, Réseau Entreprendre Côte d’Azur, Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur and Incubateur Provence Côte d’Azur. In a post published on LinkedIn, Vincent Dani, co-founder and CEO of ExAdEx-Innov, highlights that this patent is an important step for the company, strengthening its intellectual property portfolio and confirming the value of its science-driven approach to human ex vivo tissue models.
A milestone extending a trajectory rooted on the French Riviera
Founded in 2022 and based at the Nice Faculty of Medicine, ExAdEx-Innov was co-founded by Luigi Formicola, Bérengère Chignon-Sicard, Alain Doglio, Christian Dani and Vincent Dani. The biotech was awarded in March 2025 the Prix du Jury « Espoir de la Recherche » of the Descroix-Vernier EthicScience Prize for its ObFAT-3D project. It has also built a collaboration with Exsymol Monaco in dermo-cosmetics around the CAFEISILANE active ingredient. SATT Sud-Est’s entry into ExAdEx-Innov’s capital, with a 10% stake, was already documented in 2023, alongside the biotech’s initial project to explore the therapeutic potential of adipose tissue. ExAdEx-Innov is embedded in a French Riviera healthcare ecosystem structured around Nice University Hospital (CHU), Université Côte d’Azur, 3IA Côte d’Azur, IMREDD, the Provence Côte d’Azur Business Incubator and the Eurobiomed cluster, with flagship projects such as RespirERA, ReBone and the future Skin Institute.
