Arrival of the Tour de France 2024 in Nice: A Driving Event for the Economy

The recent unveiling of the official route for the Tour de France 2024 will provide significant visibility for the region, with the last three stages taking place there.

Planned are an arrival at Isola 2000 on July 19th, a stage between Nice and Col de Couillole on July 20th, and a final arrival in Nice from Monaco on July 21st, 2024.

The selection of Nice as the finishing city for the Tour de France in 2024 reinforces the positioning of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis as a prime destination for world-renowned sports competitions.

In 2023, the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis hosted several matches of the Rugby World Cup, the Iron Man, the Hopman Cup, and it will also host six football matches as part of the Olympic Games in 2024.

The Tour de France, an international cycling event, offers Nice an exceptional platform to increase its economic, sports, and cultural attractiveness.

This event is expected to be a major economic catalyst for the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, with financial and structural repercussions that will resonate well beyond the competition itself.

Economic Projection: An Investment Multiplied by Eight

The city of Nice expects a considerable return on investment with the hosting of the Tour de France. Estimates suggest that for every euro invested, 8 euros will be injected into the local economy.

This ratio results from various factors: the direct consumption of visitors, investments in infrastructure, international media advertising, and the spillover effect on the tourism sector.

Thus, the overall economic impact is estimated to be between 50 and 60 million euros, a significant figure that underscores the economic importance of the event for the territory.

Major sports competitions, such as the Tour de France, are an important economic lever for host cities. The arrival of this event in Nice in 2024, and the two preceding stages in the territory, promises a significant influx of spectators, participants, and media, generating direct and indirect benefits for the local economy.

Beyond the immediate economic impact, hosting the Tour de France represents an opportunity for the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis to showcase its natural and cultural heritage, attract long-term investments, and promote sports practice in general.

Stages of the Tour de France 2024 on the Côte d’Azur

The program for the last three stages in the Alpes-Maritimes is designed to offer a spectacular and unpredictable conclusion:

  • July 19th, Embrun-Isola 2000: This mountainous stage propels cyclists through the Cime de la Bonette, the Tour’s highest point, before an arrival at Isola 2000.
  • July 20th, Nice-Col de la Couillole: The penultimate day of the race features a challenging course, crossing four cols over 133 km, including the Col de la Couillole, the scene of the Tour’s cyclosportive stage.
  • July 21st, Monaco-Nice: A time trial will mark the end of this edition, first taking participants to the Col d’Èze, then towards a spectacular finish at Place Masséna, after a detour via the Promenade des Anglais.
