A follow-on funding round of €2.05 M closed by Cosma, a French company specialised in the acquisition and analysis of seabed data through autonomous underwater drones, bringing to more than €7 M the total funding raised over the past 18 months.
An operation led by Cosma’s historical investors — Ifremer, Ternel, Wind Capital, Caisse d’Épargne Côte d’Azur and 50 partners — joined by three new investors: Region Sud Investissement, Ring Capital and Sustainable Ocean Alliance.
Three priority development axes: pursuing deployments in complex environments, adapting to the monitoring of sensitive underwater infrastructure, integrating advanced autonomous inspection capabilities.
A positioning at the intersection of civilian, sovereignty and environmental applications, with deliverables in the form of precisely georeferenced 3D visual reconstructions of underwater environments.
A funding trajectory backing a rare convergence
Cosma, a French company specialised in the acquisition and analysis of seabed data through autonomous underwater drones, has closed a follow-on funding round of €2.05 M, bringing to more than €7 M the total funding raised over the past 18 months. All historical investors have reinvested beyond their pro rata to support acceleration in the inspection and security of critical underwater infrastructure.
The funding will allow Cosma to pursue three priority development axes.
First, pursuing deployments in complex environments: Cosma deploys its underwater drone systems to identify biodiversity, obstacles and threats on the seabed, upstream of industrial projects, protection missions or scientific knowledge acquisition, in France and internationally.
Second, adapting to the monitoring of sensitive underwater infrastructure, with the development of dedicated features across different deployment modes (shore-based, from intervention vessels or carried by aerial drones), the integration of GNSS-denied positioning capabilities and a data management approach meeting reinforced client confidentiality requirements.
Third, integrating advanced autonomous underwater inspection capabilities, mission-adapted guidance systems (coverage of steep zones, mooring lines, horizontal, vertical or hybrid structures), sensor fusion, species and threat recognition, and time-lapse monitoring.
The stakes of reinforced observation of the underwater world
“Benthic ecosystems and critical underwater infrastructure remain poorly observed, understood and monitored, even as we become aware of their strategic importance in the face of the challenges of the coming decades. Cosma has already improved the quality, cost and turnaround of underwater surveys for its clients and is preparing breakthrough technologies to simplify the observation of the submerged world. I am delighted with the support of our historical shareholders as well as that of Ring, RSI and SOA, to continue leading operational activities and R&D in parallel and bring our innovations to the heart of industrial processes and State action at sea,” says Frédéric Mittaine, CEO de Cosma.
“Cosma illustrates what we look for at Ternel: an impact that is not a communication layer but a value-creation mechanism. Better observing benthic ecosystems and better protecting critical infrastructure is the same deployment, the same data. We are reinvesting significantly in this round because this civilian – sovereignty – environment convergence is rare and because the team has proven capable of moving from demonstrator to operational missions in the most demanding environments,” underlines Timothée Poulain, Partner at Ternel.
A French Riviera anchor within a structured blue economy
Based in Nice, Cosma designs and operates its own multi-sensor underwater drone systems as well as a web-based data management platform. The company operates in scientific studies, environmental impact assessments, risk management (including pyrotechnic depollution) and infrastructure inspection, for civilian and defence applications. Its deliverables take the form of precisely georeferenced 3D visual reconstructions of underwater environments, enriched with intuitive semantic layers, geopackages and analysis reports.
This funding round is part of a structured French Riviera blue economy, documented by the CCI Nice Côte d’Azur in its “Croissance bleue 06” study. In the Alpes-Maritimes, the blue economy mobilises 2,120 establishments and 5,000 direct jobs, generating €1.2 billion in turnover across eight activity segments, from yachting to Blue Tech, including shipbuilding, marine resources and port activities. It also extends the international positioning of the Côte d’Azur, reinforced in June 2025 by hosting the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) and organising the Nice Ocean Business Forum.
