Nice: Creation of the Institute of Research on Cancer and Ageing, IRCAN
IRCAN was created on 1st January 2012 and is located at the Pasteur University Hospital Centre in Nice. It is run by Prof. Eric Gilson
IRCAN is greatly involved in research activities but also education and training.
The Centre Director is assisted by an international scientific committee. The Centre is affiliated to the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, the CNRS, INSERM and the Centre Antoine Lacassagne and works closely with the Nice University Hospital Centre.
The objective
For today's fortunate population who can expect to live increasingly longer lives, the major challenge is staying healthy and independent in order to tackle this stage of life in the best conditions. Indeed, age remains the primary risk factor in cancer and degenerative diseases affecting the nervous, renal, cardio-vascular and metabolic systems.
IRCAN's research work aims to understand more about the ageing process and cancer. The results obtained will provide a better understanding of the dysfunctions arising from cancers, certain forms of diabetes, kidney failure, neuro-degenerative and cardio-vascular diseases.
These studies will result in new diagnosis tests and the development of therapeutic strategies to treat various types of cancers and counteract the organ degeneration related to ageing and environmental stress.
