G20 in Cannes: 3rd and 4th November 2011
The President of the French Republic has chosen Cannes as the host city for the summit on 3rd and 4th November 2011
The event, which is the largest international summit ever held in France, will bring together, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, 25 Heads of State and Government, 5 guest countries and 7 international organisations from the world's major nations.
The G20 was created in 1999 in response to the financial crises in emerging countries. In the beginning, it was an annual meeting of Finance Ministers and Governors of the central banks of industrialised and emerging nations to facilitate international consultation with respect to the economy.
At France’s instigation, the G20 was restructured in late 2008: faced with the most serious economic and financial crises since the Second World War, the G20 was transformed into an economic steering committee, bringing together major policy makers at the highest level. During the founding summit in Washington in November 2008, the Heads of State and Government agreed on an exceptional action plan to avoid the collapse of the banking system and the world economy.
The G20 has become the primary forum for coordinating economic policies.
