ERDF pilot of GRID4EU, a European Smart Grid Demonstrator project

Grid4EU is based on six European projects. France is represented through the NiceGrid project based in Carros at the centre of the Eco Valley

On 22nd November, in Paris, Michèle BELLON, Chairman of the Board of ERDF (Electricité Réseau Distribution France) announced the launch of the European smart grid demonstrators project: "GRID4EU". As a major player in the field of smart grids, ERDF was appointed to coordinate this European project.

This programme, started as part of a call for proposals from the European Commission, plans for the development of the electricity networks of the future. Financed by the European Commission to the amount of €25M, this project, the estimated cost of which is estimated at €54M, is the largest funded by the European Union in the field of smart grids.

The GRID4EU programme brings together a consortium of 6 European distributors (ERDF, ENEL, Iberdrola, CEZ, Vattenfall and RWE). It will help to test the potential of smart grids in the field of integration with renewable energies, electric vehicle development, network automation, energy storage, energy efficiency and removal solutions.

Grid4EU is based on six projects that will be tested over four years in each European country represented in the consortium. For France, the NICEGRID project, managed by ERDF has been selected.

NICE GRID will study all of the issues related to the concept of the smart grids of the future, including:

  • The optimisation and use of a medium and low voltage network with massive, decentralised and intermittent insertion onto the renewable energy network (principally from photovoltaics),
  • The behaviour of customers who become agents for their production, consumption and storage of electricity,
  • The operation of an independent consumption zone fitted with resources appropriate for energy storage and isolated from the main network.

This programme will promote the complementary nature of the different projects including research initiatives and the sharing of results between the different distributors involved. GRID4EU also draws on the expertise of other industrial and scientific partners, and brings together some thirty partners from ten countries of the European Union.

They chose the Côte d'Azur

"Sophia-Antipolis is a very attractive region for any semiconductor company, for several reasons. The first one is that in the technology park of Sophia-Antipolis there is a solid tradition of analog and digital design, which is due to the presence of other big companies working in the same or similar markets, like Texas Instruments, Intel, STM and others. The second reason is linked to presence in the technology park of the Polytech'Nice-Sophia and other important schools.

That will guarantee our future growth since the region will always offer both experienced design engineers and you talents to hire."
