Boosting innovation: when research and standardization join forces
Two events highlighting this vital link just took place on the Côte d’Azur; a brief FOCUS with Walter Weigel, Director General ETSI.
The 2nd Edition of the ERCIM-ETSI Infinity Initiative, held on 2-3 April at the institute’s site in Sophia Antipolis, offered a series of advanced seminars on ‘Bio ICT and the modelling and simulation of human organs. The ETSI round table debate on “Standardization & Research ICT”, which took place on 7 April at the Acropolis in Nice, gave insight into state-of-the-art technologies presented in the ETSI book "ICT shaping the World”, and addressed the new challenges of a rapidly changing standards market.
Brief focus: Walter Weigel, Director General ETSI
“Standards are key to market success, playing a vital role in terms of return on investment since, without them, some of the most innovative solutions would fail in terms of commercial results. That’s why it is essential that standardization be considered early in the R&D cycle in order to facilitate market access. At the same time, a global approach to standards is necessary to meet the needs of the global ICT markets. Within this perspective, ETSI is extremely well placed, with a track record of standards having enabled worldwide industrial successes over the past 20 years. We plan to maintain our status as the standards organism for top researchers to come to with their innovative projects, by staying at the forefront of information and communication technologies where standards are most needed and by closely following basic research topics such as Quantum physics and BioICT…”
