“Share what you want with who you want”
This was the simple idea which kick started the Ipernity.com web site, rewarded at the 2nd Open Web Awards 2008.
Stemming from “an urge that seemed obvious” Christophe Ruelle and Christian Conti, two of Sophia Antipolis leading Web pioneers, decided, in May 2004, to set-up the Ipernity website. The site allows users to publish whatever they want (blogs, photos, videos, podcasts, etc.), share what they want with others, and last but not least, to create a powerful indexing tool that enables users to locate all their information as well as everything that other users allow them to share. And all of this is open to thousands, and even millions, of people, with practically no limitations.
As a result, the start-up found itself competing against some of the biggest Web 2.0 players at the 2nd Open Web Awards, where it was voted winner for the “photo sharing” category”.
It was the only French company to scoop an award at the international competition, which recognizes the best Web innovations in 26 categories. It also beat its US competitors, Flickr and Tinypics, which is no mean feat given that 50,000 websites were nominated for the Open Awards 2008 and over 80,000 votes were cast in the first round and 90,000 in the second round!
